Karnal’s ₹125-Crore Water and Sewerage Makeover Begins

The AMRUT-2 Scheme has been launched in Karnal with an estimated investment of Rs 125 crore to strengthen water supply and sewerage infrastructure across newly added and regularised colonies, as well as villages within municipal limits.

The project follows the completion of the first phase of AMRUT, under which major sewer pipelines, sewage treatment plants, and intermediate pumping stations were developed across the city. Under the AMRUT-2 programme, new water supply and sewerage pipelines will be laid in several areas including Kanika Vihar Extension, RK Puram Part-II, Sukhbir Colony, Vijay Nagar, Balram Colony, Phoosgarh, Shakti Puram Extension, Vikas Colony, and Meerut Road.

The scheme also includes the strengthening of sewerage infrastructure in Sirsi, Ambedkar Colony, Jhanjhari, Uchana, Dholgarh, and Guru Nanakpura. In addition, around 20 new tubewells will be installed to improve drinking water supply and address increasing demand.

A consultant has already been appointed to prepare the detailed project report (DPR), which is expected to be completed within three months before implementation begins.

According to officials, the upgraded infrastructure is expected to improve water distribution efficiency, strengthen sewerage management, and support the long-term urban infrastructure needs of the city’s growing population.
